Post 28 tops Gaffney
PHOTO BY LARRY HILLIARD Post 109's John Michaels is greeted at home plate after scoring against Inman on Monday. Michaels drove in two runs with a single in the sixth ining. Post 28 ace David Haselden got the job done again.
Haselden allowed seven hits to help Post 28 to a 5-1 victory over visiting Post 109 on Tuesday. It was Haselden's second win in as many starts against Gaffney.
He shut out Gaffney on just two hits on June 4.
Gaffney coach Jeff Osment said his batters are too impatient against Haselden.
"We didn't swing at quality pitches," he said. "If we swung at pitches in the zone, we'd do better."
For the second time this season, Gaffney's Bobby Jackson came out on the losing end in his duel against Haselden. This time, Jackson gave up 12 hits and struck out three.
"Bobby threw the ball well, but we had a couple of lapses in the field," Osment said.
Spartanburg jumped to a 2-0 firstinning lead. Gaffney had a chance for a big inning in the sixth but couldn't score after loading the bases.
Spartanburg then extended its lead to 4-0 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning.
Gaffney's lone run came in the seventh on a solo homer by Spencer Epps, who also had a single.
John Michaels, McCrae Norton, Bryan Parsons, Jackson and Michael Hughey had the other hits for Post 109.
The news wasn't all bad for Post 109 this week. Jason Biershenk allowed just five hits and struck out three in Gaffney's 10-0 win over Inman on Monday.
Parsons had four hits and Bubba Wright had three hits and three RBIs.
Leading 2-0, Gaffney struck for four runs in the sixth to break the game open.
Wright had a RBI double before scoring on a passed ball. Michaels followed with a 2-run single.
Hughey, Wright and Jackson had the RBIs as Gaffney extended its lead to 9-0 in the seventh.
Post 109 completed its scoring with a run in the eighth to end the game on the 10-run rule.
