Indians rout Tennessee powerhouse

MARK HUFF MARK HUFF Gaffney boys varsity basketball coach Mark Huff was expecting a competitive game against a Volunteer State perennial power Wednesday at Wofford College.

But what he got was a blowout.

The Indians routed Kingsport Dobyins- Bennett High School, 93-64. Kingsport Dobyins- Bennett finished 30-5 last season in advancing to the state tournament.

"They lost some of their players from last year's team, but we looked a little better," said Huff, contrasting his team's play Wednesday to its performance at Spartanburg Christian last week. "I thought our press caused them a lot of problems."

The Indians also showed signs of improvement on offense.

"We got better looks at the basket," Huff said. "Our halfcourt offensive execution was better."

Huff also said his team appeared to be in better condition than its opponent.

Huff declined to single out any individual performances.

"I saw improvement from everybody," he said.

The Indians continue their summer program with a stop at Lander today and Saturday. The Indians will be busy at Lander.

"We'll play seven or eight games," Huff said. "I'm just continuing to look for improvement. I want us to get better on the defensive end."

He used the recently-completed NBA finals to make his point.

"I told our team that Boston won the championship by playing defense," he said.
