Local all-star s thump foes

By LARRY HILLIARD Ledger Sports Editor larry@gaffneyledger.com

The Blacksburg Major League All-Stars are special.

Just ask their opposition at the Cal Ripken League district tournament.

The team has breezed to today's championship game at the Cherokee County Youth Sports Complex by beating its opposition by a combined score of 47-6. Blacksburg already has earned a trip to the state tournament in North Augusta next week and can capture the district title with a win today over Boiling Springs.

Brandon Scruggs will get the start today for Blacksburg. Boiling Springs must defeat Blacksburg twice to claim the district tournament crown.

Blacksburg opened the district tournament with a 16-1 win over Boiling Springs on Thursday. Tyler Camp started the 13-run, second-inning explosion with a homer. But Adam Lawhorn did Camp one better, by smacking a grand slam and 2-run homer in the same inning.

Camp also homered in Blacksburg's 16-2 win over Westside on Friday. Tyler Cobb and Jake Morgan combined for the win for Blacksburg.

The Blacksburg all-stars advanced to today's championship game with a 15-3 win over Woodruff on Saturday. Scruggs pitched the first four innings before giving way to Alex Raines and Evan McCurrey.

Both Gaffney all-star teams have been eliminated. The Gaffney "A" all-star team opened the tournament with a 7-6 loss to Woodruff. The team then beat Westside "A" before falling to Boiling Springs 17-3 on Sunday.

Thomas Mabry, Luke Lancaster, Clay Phillips, Grayson McCraw and Josh Cerino all hit safely in the game for Gaffney.

The Gaffney "B" all-stars were eliminated in a loss to Boiling Springs on Saturday.
