History, fireworks, fun abound at Cowpens National Battlefield

Cowpens National Battlefield will celebrate the nation's independence with fireworks and activities on Saturday, July 5. The free festivities begin at 9:30 a.m. with a guided battlefield walk and end with a professional firework show around 9 p.m.

Local reenactors will set up a soldiers' camp and give musket and cannon firing demonstrations at 2, 3:30, 5 and 6:30 p.m. Additional battlefield programs begin at the Visitor Center at 2:45 p.m., and 6 p.m. The Visitor Center will be open 9 a.m.- 8:45 p.m.

On the lawn behind the Visitor Center, the Spartanburg Community Band will play patriotic music from 7:30- 9 p.m., leading up to the fireworks. In the event of inclement weather, only the fireworks display will be rescheduled for Sunday, July 6.

New to the event this year will be children's activities

from 7-9 p.m. After rolling a musket cartridge and performing a Revolutionary War musket drill, children will use a quill pen to sign up as Junior Patriots.

Bring a picnic and enjoy the afternoon with your family and friends. Please note that there will not be food available in the park. Water and soft drinks will be available for purchase outside the Visitor Center.

Park regulations prohibit personal fireworks, sparklers, chemlights, etc. For visitors' safety, Macedonia Fire Department will close Green River Road and the battlefield trail at 5:30 p.m. Bring a flashlight to light your way back to your car after the fireworks show.
