      It took only 12 minutes Monday evening for the Cherokee County School Board to pick up a new name for a $7 million building under construction. Cherokee Community Learning Center was the name chosen for the building that serves as home for the district's adult education and alternative programs.

Scrap yard burglar gets 10 years
      A 51-year-old Gaffney man pleaded guilty June 24 to the March burglary of a Blacksburg scrap yard. Hoyle Mincey, of Marietta Road, entered the plea before Circuit Court Judge Mark Hayes in Cherokee County General Sessions Court.

      The Cherokee County Sheriff's Office reported the arrest of three people following a Monday evening home invasion on Blue Ranch Road in Gaffney. The sheriff's office claims two 19-year-old men and a 15- year female forcibly entered a home at about 11:30 p.m. Monday and then assaulted and robbed a man.

     HARPIST HERE - Hannah Blalock, a 16-year-old harpist from Matthews, N.C., performed during the Sunday, June 29 worship service at Limestone Presbyterian Church. $300,000 grant awarded to establish after-school programs

      B.D. Lee Elementary School students will benefit from a $300,000 federal grant awarded Monday for a community learning center. The Boys and Girls Clubs of the Upstate received a 21st Century grant totalling $299,700. The grant will be used by the club to establish afterschool programs at B.D. Lee Elementary and schools in Spartanburg District 6.
