Blacksburg all-stars - simply the best

      The Blacksburg All-Stars were as hot as the summer weather at the Cal Ripken League district tournament for ages 11 and 12. Blacksburg finished the tournament with a 4-mark, including a 7-2 victory over Boiling Springs in Monday's championship game at the Cherokee County Youth Sports Complex.

Post 109 explodes in ninth

      Post 109 detonated its own fireworks in the ninth inning on Tuesday. Clinging to a 2-run lead in the top of the ninth inning, Gaffney sent 16 batters to the plate and scored 11 runs in a 17-5 win over Union. Spencer Epps and Bubba Wright each drove in two runs and John Michaels had a pair of hits in the ninth inning.

Gaffney, Lancaster split twinbill

      The Post 109 junior American Legion team and Lancaster entered Tuesday tied for the top spot in League V. Today, they remained deadlocked after splitting a doubleheader. Michael Wright allowed six hits and struck out five and Josh Mata had two hits to help Post 109 earn a split with a 6-4 win in the nightcap.

Owner shuts down Franchitti's team

      CHARLOTTE, N.C.- NASCAR team owner Chip Ganassi shut down Dario Franchitti's race team Tuesday because of a lack of sponsorship, putting the former IndyCar Series champion's future in doubt. Franchitti, the 2007 Indianapolis 500 winner and series champion, has struggled in his first NASCAR season driving Ganassi's No. 40 Dodge.
