Community events
¦ The American Red Cross will hold Adult CPR and First Aid classes Monday, July 7, from 6-10 p.m. Infant and Child CPR classes will be held Tuesday, July 8, from 7-10 p.m. All classes will be at the American Red Cross office, 405 N. Logan St. To register call 864-489- 6066. Pre-payment for the classes is required.
¦ The American Red Cross will have a blood drive Thursday, July 3, from 2- 6:30 p.m. at the ARC office, 405 N. Logan St. All donors will receive a free American Red Cross t-shirt and each donor will be placed in a drawing to win one of three $1,000 gas cards. To make an appointment call 489-6066. Appointments are necessary to avoid long waits.
Holiday events
¦ Hopewell Baptist Church in Blacksburg will have its annual 4th of July celebration Friday from 7-9 p.m. Everyone is invited to come enjoy food, games, music and fireworks. Everything is free.
¦ Pleasant Hill Baptist Church will have a community wide July 4th celebration Friday from 5-7:30 p.m. The event will take place in the church fellowship building and on the grounds. The menu includes barbecue, baked beans, slaw, buns, chips, tea, drinks and desserts. Hot dogs for children will be available. Games include a water slide, basketball, horseshoes, badminton and other water games. Kids need to wear shorts and t-shirts (no bathing suits) and bring a towel.
¦ The City of Kings Mountain will host its "Fabulous 4th!" on Friday, July 4. The event begins at 6 p.m. with a concert by The Night Move Band at the walking track next to the Jake Early Sports Complex and YMCA on Highway 161 (Cleveland Avenue). A patriotic opening to the fireworks begins at 8:45 p.m. featuring The Loch Norman Pipe Band and Revolutionary War re-enactors led by Mayor Rick Murphrey on horseback. The fireworks show, the largest in five surrounding counties, will begin about 9:30 pm.
Barbecue sales
¦ The CKC Volunteer Fire Department is accepting orders for hash and barbecue. Orders may be placed by calling 864-839-4117. Pick ups can be made Friday, July 4, beginning at about 6 a.m. at the fire station on Old Chester Road. Due to high demand and early sellouts in past years, Fire Chief "Stick" Manning says the department is increasing the amount of food being prepared this year and expects the department will cook about 800 pounds of hash and about 700 pounds of barbecue. Proceeds from the sale benefit the fire department.
¦ Cherokee Creek Volunteer Fire Department will have a barbecue and hash sale Friday, July 4, from 7 a.m. until at the Cherokee Creek Baptist Church Family Life Center.

¦ The Granard High School mass reunion for all students and teachers will be held July 4-6 in Gaffney. For more information, call Vera Williams, 487-4673. Total cost for the three-day weekend of activities is $55. The weekend will include a get-acquainted hour and dance, picnic, class speakers and worship services with plenty of food at all events.

Holiday closings
¦ The Cherokee County Public Library will be closed Friday, July 4, and Saturday, July 5.
¦ Iron City Ministries Inc. in Blacksburg will be closed through July 4 and will reopen July 7. The summer operating schedule is Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. until noon.
¦ The City of Gaffney Sanitation Department will observe Friday, July 4, as a holiday. Friday's route will be picked up Wednesday, July 2. Residents should have carts out on the curbside by 7 a.m, July 2 for pick up.
¦ PeachCenter Ministries is closed for the holiday and will reopen on July 9.
¦ The Cherokee County Solid Waste Collection, Recycling and Landfill departments will be closed Friday, July 4, in observance of Independence Day. Friday's routes will be picked up on Friday, July 11. Extra containers may be used for overflow. The Recycling Center's receiving bay will be open Saturday, July 5.
Gospel concerts
¦ A gospel music explosion will be held Saturday, July 5, at Chesnee Gospel Music Center. Featured will be Darrin Lovelace, Gee Risen, Anchored, Kevin Pleasant, Sandi Collins, Acoustic Faith, David Coffin and the Rev. Micheal Pardue. Admission is free.
