BARRY SCOTT MARTIN JR. BARRY SCOTT MARTIN JR. A 27-year-old Blacksburg man has made the South Carolina Department of Corrections' most wanted list after escaping from a minimum security facility in Columbia on June 30.

Barry Scott Martin Jr. had been on probation since 2002 for a string of vehicle break-ins but court records show his probation was revoked Feb. 11 by Circuit Court Judge Roger Couch for a violation and Martin was sent to the state prison system. The Department of Corrections (DOC) listed Martin's prison term as 10 years.

While details hadn't been completely sorted out, Martin escaped from the Manning Correctional Institution in Columbia at about 2:50 p.m. on June 30.

Josh Gelinas, a spokesman for the DOC, said the escape remains under investigation and he couldn't say how it occurred.

The Manning Correctional Institution is one of 11 minimum security facilities in the state, but one of only two minimum security facilities with perimeter fencing, Gelinas said.

Martin had not been captured as of Thursday evening. When recaptured, he will face a felony chargeof escape in addition to his other to his other legal woes, and likely won't be welcomed back into minimum security settings.

"He'll be in a more secure prison," Gelinas confirmed, "likely maximum security."

According to DOC records, Martin has various identifying marks and tattoos. He has scars on both arms and tattoos on his right and left forearms and the right and left sides of his neck as well as tattoos on his stomach, chest, back and legs.

Anyone who has information about Martin's whereabouts is asked to call the Department of Corrections Fugitive Apprehension Unit at (877) 349-2139; the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division at (803) 737-9000; or local law enforcement.

Martin is one of two inmates to escape from a DOC facility in the past two weeks.
