Bright graduates from basic training

Farmers offering good selection of produce at market
      The demand continues to 'outgrow' the supply at the City of Gaffney's new Gaffney Station Farmers Market. Three farmers offered their fruits, vegetables and home canned items last Wednesday afternoon on the lot in front of the old Gaffney Post Office, soon to be the City of Gaffney Visitors' Center and home of CAVA Art Gallery.

      Always the jokester, former Ledger publisher Louis Sossamon placed a sign in his tomato patch to keep his friends and neighbors from helping themselves to his prized produce. The sign reads: "BE CAREFUL 'Pickin' - Two plants sprayed with poison!" The other signs informs tomato lovers that picking rights are available on a 'CASH ONLY' basis.

Proposal would make it easier to build in city
      The City of Gaffney Planning Commission will consider proposals that will make it easier for businesses to build in the city. The zoning ordinance amendments include changes to front and rear yards setback requirements for neighborhood and office commercial zoning designations, Gaffney Zoning Administrator Tony Lavender said.

Man gets 10 years
      A 25-year-old Elgin man was sentenced to 10 years in prison Thursday in Cherokee County General Sessions Court after pleading guilty to the Jan. 23, 2007 robbery of a Providence Road convenience store.

Bethany Baptist Church youths to tell about recent mission trip
      The youths of Bethany Baptist Church returned Saturday, June 28, from a weeklong mission trip to Memphis, Tenn. On Sunday, July 5, at 11 a.m. those making the trip will share testimonies and present a slide show about their experiences and the activities in which they participated during the week.

Former Converse professor is new principal at Mary Bramlett
      Tom Abbott was quite happy in a second career as a college professor when he accepted an offer last fall to visit Mary Bramlett Elementary. Abbott had little idea the request from Cherokee County School District Superintendent Dr. Bill James would result in planning for a new school year instead of teaching college classes.
