Reid to play in Europe
      Former Gaffney High basketball standout AZ Reid likely won't get to wear an NBA uniform next season. So, he'll settle for a uniform from a European team. Reid, who was not drafted by an NBA team, said his agent has received four or five offers from European teams, including two in Greece.

Jr. Post 109 tops York; finishes as No. 1 seed
      There's been no secret to the success of the American Legion Post 109 junior team this season: solid pitching and taking advantage of its opponents' mistakes have carried the team to the top of the League V standings. That winning formula was on display again in the regular-season finale against York.

Norton, Gerwick lead Gaffney past Union
      Post 109 batters made it rough on Union - again. Twenty-four hours after scoring 17 runs in a win, Gaffney exceeded that total in a 19-3 victory over Union on Tuesday. For the second straight game, Post 109 also exploded for a big inning. On Tuesday, Gaffney scored 11 runs in the ninth inning - two less than Post 109 scored in the sixth inning Wednesday night.

      South Carolina reports 9 violations The University of South Carolina reports it had nine NCAA secondary violations between January and June. The school said Thursday only one infraction was considered the more serious Level I violation. That involved an athletic department staffer betting dinner on a game not involving South Carolina.

      ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Pennant fever is alive in the oddest of places. Ticket lines are longer, television ratings are rising and the young, budget-minded Tampa Bay Rays are in first place in the AL East, looking down on the big-spending Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees.

Dolphins capture swim meet
      The Cherokee County Family YMCA Dolphins Swim Team hosted a seventeam meet on Saturday, June 21. The Dolphins held off Hendersonville to win the event. Sumter, Anderson, Union, Orangeburg and Clinton rounded out the order of finish.

NHRA makes changes after driver's death
      The death of Scott Kalitta has shaken up the NHRA and sent the organization, its owners and drivers back to the drawing board on safety issues. Kalitta was killed in a fiery crash June 21 in Englishtown, N.J.
