County council once again postpones property reassessments The appraised value of your home won't be changing until at least 2009. For the second straight year, Cherokee County Council has agreed to postpone the completion of countywide property reassessments. Cherokee County Interim Administrator Ben Clary told council Monday that recent legislation grants counties the extra time. "The extension gives the county extra time to review its figures," Clary said. "This will be a benefit to taxpayers." County Tax Assessor Bob Everett said it was not his recommendation to delay the reassessment again. "Members of council weren't feeling that secure in what we were doing," Everett said. Despite council's concerns, Everett said his office's reassessment figures were reviewed and approved by the Department of Revenue. In a story that appeared in April, Everett said the reassessment was complete and his office was waiting for a company to update its software to comply with changes in the law. He added the reassessment notices should be arriving in county mailboxes in May. As a result of the latest postponement, Everett said appraisals of new buildings will be based on the 2003 reassessment and his office will have less time to compete the 2012 countywide reassessment. Under state law, counties must perform a reassessment every five years. |
