The Post 109 American Legion junior team enjoyed the comforts of home Monday and it showed.

Corey Crissone was 3 for 4 with three RBIs and Alex Trammell knocked in three runs to help Gaffney beat visiting York 12-2 in the opening game Monday of a best-of-three playoff series.

Josh Mata also continued to swing a hot bat with a couple of RBIs for Post 109.

The game ended after five innings on the 10-run mercy rule.

Heavy rains postponed game two of the series on Tuesday. It has been rescheduled for today at York. Game three, if necessary, will be played here on Thursday.

Monday's game was over early as Gaffney took advantage of the York pitcher's wildness to score 10 runs in the first inning. The York pitcher walked the first three batters he faced to set the stage for the big inning.

Crissone then lashed a RBI single before Clay McKowen walked to load the bases again. Trammell smacked a two-run single and Nick Smiley doubled to knock in another run.

Two more runs scored on an error. Smiley had a RBI triple to make it 7-0.

After Jared Mills walked, Mata delivered a 2- run triple. Crissone capped the onslaught with a RBI single.

Gaffney sent 14 batters to the plate in the inning.

"Their pitcher couldn't throw a strike," Gaffney coach Travis Clary said

Michael Wright allowed just three hits and struck out eight to earn the win. He also walked two in five innings of work.

"He pitched four good innings," Clary said. "He started out strong and ended strong."

York scored both of its runs in the third inning.

Post 109 added another run in the fourth on singles by McKowen and Wright and a groundout by Trammell.

Crissone knocked in the final run with a single, scoring Ryan Frock.
