Police: Suspect tried to flee scene of crime in a taxi

ORRIN PETTY ORRIN PETTY A 22-year-old Shelby, N.C., man was arrested early Friday and accused of trying to flee from an armed robbery at a grocery store in a taxi.

Orrin Henderson Petty, 1800 Woodbine St., is charged with armed robbery.

According to the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office, Petty walked into the Ingle's on 3rd Street on Friday at about 6:51 a.m., armed with a black handgun, and demanded money. Police claim he stole about $8,000.

Sheriff Bill Blanton said a witness subsequently saw Petty getting into a cab on Logan Street and called 911. Officers stopped the cab and were able to recover the money and the gun while arresting Petty, Blanton said.

No one was hurt during the incident.
