District maintenance workers were busy Wednesday morning installing an irrigation system at the Blacksburg High School football practice field. A new softball field and renovations to restroom facilities are part of summer work to upgrade the school's athletic facilities. The Blacksburg High stadium will have additional women's restroom facilities when the football season starts in late August.

District maintenance workers are preparing to place four new bathroom stalls in the original women's restroom building under T.A. Campbell Stadium. The $7,550 project was approved by school trustees in February due to a lack of restroom facilities in the school's athletic field house.

When the $1.4 million field house opened last September, it had only three stalls in the women's restroom. This prompted complaints at football games from women about long lines due to an inadequate number of restrooms.

The new project will double the amount of restrooms available for women in the stadium.

Maintenance workers have replaced the old floor tiles and will soon start work on installing the new bathroom equipment, district maintenance director John Burch- stead said. The work involves installing new floor tiles, commodes, sinks, painting and new privacy partitions. It will be completed over the next several weeks.

Blacksburg opens the season with a home game Aug. 22 against Walhalla.

"Our goal is to have it ready by the first game," Burchstead said. "We want it to be as nice as the restrooms that are in the field house."
