      The Gaffney Gold Mite League all-stars refused to crack on Monday. After dropping the first game 17-6 to Woodruff, Jack Masters, Kyle Hamrick and Dylan Peterson each homered to help Gaffney capture the Cal Ripken state tournament for 7 and 8 year olds with a 17-3 victory.

      If it's July, Post 109 must be turning heads in postseason play. Seeking its fourth straight state tournament appearance, Post 109 took a commanding 2-0 lead in its opening round best-of-five playoff series with a 12-2 victory over Fort Mill Tuesday at Commissioners Field.

      The formula for capturing the American Legion Junior state tournament is simple: overpowering pitching and error-free defense. "Pitching and defense wins championships," Gaffney coach Travis Clary. Gaffney had plenty of pitching in its playoff series against York. Michael Wright allowed just three hits in Gaffney's 12-2 series-opening win over York.

Indians show improvement in passing league

      Gaffney High football coach Phil Strickland said he's feeling better about his team after Monday's appearance at the Presbyterian College 7-on-7 passing league. "We are getting better," Strickland said. "The kids are learning the ins and outs of the patterns.
