Man charged with felony DUI; building inspector hurt
City of Gaffney Building Inspector Donald Elder remains in serious condition after a Wednesday traffic accident.
Police said Elder's vehicle was struck in the side by a Gaffney man who faces charges of felony driving under the influence and simple possession of marijuana.
A witness told police that Frederick Antwan Marks, 35, of 313 Parris St., ran a stop sign and struck Elder's vehicle around 7:30 p.m.
Both vehicles came to rest in the front yard of an Anthony Street residence, according to documents on file at the Gaffney Police Department.
A bleeding Elder was unconscious when authorities arrived, the report states.
Elder was airlifted to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center, where he remained in serious condition Thursday, a spokesperson said.
A person who knows Elder said he was suffering from head and lung injuries, but appears to be improving.
Authorities said they noticed a strong smell of marijuana from Marks' vehicle. A search of the vehicle turned up marijuana in the floorboard of the driver's side, a supplemental report states.
Marks was transported to Upstate Carolina Medical Center, where he was tested for alcohol or drug intoxication and then taken to Charlotte for treatment.
