Free concert

Whippoorwill will present a free concert Saturday, July 19, at 7 p.m. in the visitor center auditorium at Kings Mountain Military Park. Nash Lyle and Frank Trice play a mixture of original songs, traditional country blues and Celtic and Appalachian dance tunes that range from the 17th century to modern day. Complementing their wide ranging vocals, Lyle plays guitar, fiddle and harmonica while Tice weaves in mandolin, whistles and flatpicks on guitar. They will be joined by Clover High School senior Zach Lemhouse, who plays fiddle in both Kings Mountain National Military Park's and Kings Mountain State Park's historical and educational programs.

Church news

The United Methodist Women of Dunton United Methodist Church will have their annual Mad Hatters Tea on Saturday, July 19, from 3- 5 p.m. The tea is open to women and men and the only requirement to attend is that one wear a favorite hat. Speaker will be Richard Richardson of Fruit of the Spirit Ministries. Refreshments will be served and prizes awarded.

Annual Women's Day will be observed Sunday, July 20, at Dunton United Methodist Church at 11:15 a.m. Speaker will be the Rev. Antoinette Gardner, an associate minister at Mount Tabor Baptist Church and daughter of Frank and Marva Littlejohn.

Antioch Baptist Church, 300 Serene Drive, will have a singing program Saturday, July 19, at 5 p.m. featuring the Children's Ensemble Choir. The church's YWAs will have a missionary program Sunday, July 20, at 10 a.m. The theme is "Running for the Goal to Get My Crown." Jennifer Hemphill, associate minister of Bethel Baptist Church, will be the speaker.

Suck Creek Baptist Church will have revival services July 20-22. The Rev. Milfred Brock Sr., Senior Pastor of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church, Pauline, will speak Sunday at 6 p.m. Services Monday and Tuesday will be at 7 p.m. with Bishop Randy Borders, formerly of Gaffney and now pastor of Faith Harvest Church Ministries in Shelby, bringing the messages.

Shady Grove Baptist Church will have Armed Forces Recognition Day on Sunday, July 20, during the 11 a.m. worship service for members who have served or are presently protecting the freedom of all Americans.

Shady Grove Baptist Church Youth Ministry will have its monthly Youth Day service Sunday, July 20. Pastor Lee Byers will deliver the message. The Shady Grove Primary Class will be in charge of all activities beginning with Sunday School at 9:45. The Shady Grove Youth Singers will provide special music. Shakila and Darrett Lattimore are the Primary Class teachers and program coordinators.

Gethsemane Baptist Church, 190 Beech St., Pacolet, will have a one-day revival Sunday, July 20, at 3 p.m. Speaker will be the Rev. Myrondous Washington, pastor and founder of Agape Global Church, Atlanta, Ga.

The Pastor's Aide of Limestone Missionary Baptist Church invites the public to attend the fourth anniversary of Pastor Michael L. Golden on Sunday, July 20, at 3 p.m. Guest speaker will be the Rev. Robert Coleman, pastor of Hoppers Chapel Baptist Church, Shelby.

The Musical Choir of Mt. Sinai Missionary Baptist Church will celebrate its 50th anniversary Sunday, July 20, at 4 p.m. Guest speaker will be Dr. L.T. Tate, pastor of Shiloh Baptist Church, Pauline.

Eastside Baptist Church, 1284 E. Cherokee St., Blacksburg, will host is third Saturday singing July 19 at 7 p.m. Guests will be The Bluegrass Gospel, In His Glory and The Hamptons.

The Missionary Circle of Philadelphia Baptist Church, 1195 Pacolet Hwy., will sponsor a "Fill-a-Pew" rally Sunday, July 27, at 3 p.m The program will feature five young adults - Antonio Lipscomb, Whitney Gaffney, Brittany Smith, Mayi Hawk and Keith Gibbs - as speakers.

The Ushers Ministry of Bethel Baptist Church will celebrate its anniversary Sunday, July 20, at 10:30 a.m. Ushers will be in charge of the pulpit services and speaker will be the Rev. Patrick Suber, pastor of Foster Chapel Baptist Church in Roebuck and principal of Jessie S. Bobo Elementary School in Spartanburg.

Meetings

The Cherokee County Education Association- Retired will meet Thursday, July 24, at noon in Limestone College's Stephenson Dining Hall. This will be the first of four meetings for 2008-2009. A special invitation is extended, not only to the new retirees, but also to the retirees who haven't been able to attend in the past but now find themselves free to come. In order for lunch reservations to be made, call Pat Elmore, 489-3610, on or before Monday, July 21. Lunch is $7.50 and dues for the year are $5.

Blacksburg VFW Post 4941 and its Ladies Auxiliary will meet Tuesday, July 22, at 7 p.m. Refreshments will be served after the meeting.

Singing

Chesnee Gospel Music Center, 674 Green Lake Road, Chesnee, will have a singing Saturday, July 19, featuring Faith Three from Hickton, Ala. For more information, call 828-223-1514.

Fund raisers

The Senior Centers of Cherokee County will be holding fund raisers this weekend for the Blacksburg Senior Center renovations. A yard sale will be held at the Blacksburg Center, 109 Brugg St., today, July 18, from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. and then on Saturday, July 19, from 8 .m.-11 a.m. A yard sale will be held at the Gaffney Senior Center, 499 W. Rutledge Ave., today, July 18, from 1-4 p.m. and Saturday, July 19, from 7-10 a.m. A variety of items are on sale at both locations.

Bible schools

Vacation Bible School will be held July 20-25 at Cherokee Falls Baptist Church, 109 School St., Cherokee Falls, from 6-8 p.m. The theme is "God's Big Back Yard." Classes will be provided for preschool through youth. No nursery will be provided.

Metropolitan A.M.E. Zion Church will have Vacation Bible School July 21-23 from 6-8:30 p.m.
