A show of strength
Photo by LARRY HILLIARD Post 109's Dustin Byars delivers a pitch against Fort Mill in a victory on Tuesday. Post 109 completed the first-round sweep with a 13-1 victory at Fort Mill on Wednesday. Post 109 batters have caught fire at just the right time.
Lee Gerwick, John Michaels, Bryan Parsons and Michael Hughey each had three hits to help Post 109 sweep its opening round playoff series with a 13-1 victory over Fort Mill on Wednesday.
Gaffney outscored Fort Mill, 44-5, in the 3-game series.
"We were selective and when we got our pitches we made the most of it," Post 109 manager Jeff Osment said. "That was the story of the series."
Post 109 also received strong starting pitching. On Wednesday, it was Jake Turner, who limited Fort Mill to only eight hits and one run. He struck out four and walked just two batters.
"He settled down after the second and third innings and pitched well for the rest of the game," Osment said.
Gaffney advances to play the winner of Walhalla and Irmo, beginning on Monday.
Osment knows the level of competition will jump up a notch in the next round.
"We just have to build on what we've done," he said.
McCrae Norton, Bobby Jackson, Bubba Wright and Spencer Epps all had two hits for Post 109, which put the game away with 10 runs in the fourth inning. Michaels, who had a solo homer in the sixth inning, led off with a single, stole second and scored on Wright's infield single.
Epps and Gerwick followed with 2-run singles before Norton knocked in a run on a fielder's choice.
Michaels walked in his second plate appearance of the inning and scored, along with Parsons, on Hughey's double.
After Michaels clubbed his homer, Parsons and Jackson hit back to back doubles for Post 109's other run in the sixth inning.
Fort Mill scored both of its runs in the fifth inning.
Gaffney jumped on top 1-0 in the second on Hughey's single and Jackson's RBI fielder's choice.
