Granard football practice begins Aug. 12

Granard Middle School will begin football practice on Aug. 12 from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. Players must have a physical performed by their family physician. Physical forms are available at the school office.

Players should wear shorts, tennis shoes and a T-shirt to each practice.

Parris holds

free basketball clinic

Gaffney High girls varsity coach Stacey Parris will hold a clinic free of charge for girls in grades 4 and up on Wednesday July 23 and Thursday, July 24 at the Gaffney High gym.

The clinic will begin at 1 p.m. and end at 4 p.m.

Pickett joins

LC hoops staff

Jake Pickett has joined the Limestone College men's basketball staff as an assistant coach.

Pickett comes to Limestone after serving as an assistant coach at Embry Riddle University.

"Jake is a great hire for us," Limestone head coach Brandon Scott said. "He has been around winning programs for his entire playing and coaching career. Jake has been around some of the best coaches in the country over the past 10 years. He played for Ed Kershner at Oviedo High School, who has over 800 wins in the state of Florida, and Steve Ridder at Embry Riddle University, who has won a national championship and is one of the best coaches in the country."

Originally from Chuluota, Fla., Pickett was the starting point guard for Embry-Riddle for three seasons. He appears in several Eagle record books, including finishing fourth in career assists (526), fifth in career assists average (4.05), sixth in career three-pointers made (143), and seventh in career steals (179). Pickett also recorded the Eagles' eighth-best single-season mark for assists (185) and steals (68) in 2005-06.

Panthers sign

2 more draft picks

The Carolina Panthers have signed two more draft choices, reaching deals with linebacker Dan Connor and defensive end Hilee Taylor.

With Thursday's actions, Carolina has now signed five of its nine draft picks. Still unsigned are first rounders Jonathan Stewart and Jeff Otah, third-round choice Charles Godfrey and seventh-round pick Geoff Schwartz.

Connor ranks as Penn State's alltime leader with 419 tackles, including 14 sacks, three forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries and four interceptions. He won the 2007 Bednarik Award, given to the nation's top defensive player.
