New standards will cost county $13,000
The county's C&D landfill will be changing its name but not the type of demolition debris it will accept.
The county's C&D landfill will be classified as a Class II Industrial Level I landfill under new guidelines by the state Department of Health and Environmental Control.
The county will have until Nov. 11, 2009, to comply with DHEC regulations for Class II Industrial Level I landfills, Landfill supervisor Phillip Ellis told the Cherokee County Public Works Committee on Thursday.
Under the guidelines, the county will likely have to increase the number of monitoring wells at the site.
Ellis said despite the new compliance measures the county will not expand the kinds of materials it accepts at the landfill.
An engineering report estimated it will cost about $13,000 to comply with DHEC standards. The cost includes an update to the county's 20-year solid waste plan, county officials said.
The public works committee agreed to recommend the expenditure to full council Monday.
