Miller, left, volunteer and children's activities coordinator, presents Carolyn P. Cash the 2007-2008 Volunteer of the Year award. Carolyn P. Cash has been named the Cherokee Children's Home 2007-2008 Volunteer of the Year.

She was recently presented a plaque and a name plate has been added to a permanent plaque that hangs in the living room area at Children's Home.

Cash, a native of Gaffney, has worked as a clerk in the county auditor's office for 22 years. She has been a member of Macedonia Baptist Church for 62 years and has volunteered in many areas at her church. She is the senior adult director, Sonshine Choir director, a member of Women on Mission No. 1 and has taught Sunday School.

For 22 years, she has been secretary of the Associational Leadership Team for Broad River Association.

Cash has served as a volunteer at the Children's Home since October 1991 and previously received Volunteer of the Year in 1996-1997. Her primarily responsibility was to purchase groceries twice a month. She volunteered her time but also recruited her own volunteers to help her. She has mentored four young girls through the years. First was her granddaughter, Kayla. Then one of Kayla's special friends, Ashley Yon, helped. Then Kaitlyn Miller and Kiersten James joined in.

Cash says that her purpose in life is to be a good "grand" to her six grandchildren and sharing and helping others in need.

Cash says that volunteering has made her appreciate her family more and she met many new friends while volunteering at the Children's Home.

"Everyone has been so nice and caring," she said.

Cash shows that volunteering is important in her life by sharing her talents with her church, community and non-profit organizations through the years.

Volunteers Needed

Would you like to volunteer at the Children's Home? It could be an hour a week, a week-end activity with the children, going to a movie with children, helping with homework or reading to younger children, You could provide a craft for the children to make or just come and help with mealtimes.

To come to the home and directly work with the children, one must be 18 years old or be in Beta Club or band and need volunteer service hours and must have two background checks. Prospective volunteers must complete a Volunteer Application, a SLED form for S.C. Department of Social Services and Central Registry form. It takes about three weeks for the clearances to be approved.

There are other areas for volunteer that do not require the above papers that include person(s) to go to Bi-Lo to distribute Bi-Lo Booster Club scan sheets to get Bi-Lo to donate charity money to Children's Home; provide a birthday cake and ice cream, and one gift, if possible, for birthday parties; wash the home's bus or van; a seamstress to sew bags for transporting clothes, hem pants, make homemade blankets (personal size for children); do yard work and repair bikes.

If interested in volunteering in any of these areas, call Sandra G. Miller at 487-0177, 9:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.
