Aug. 2 fundraiser will help send local kids to the Great White Way Local youngsters may get the chance of a lifetime to see some Broadway plays and enjoy the thrills of New York City. The Gaffney Little Theater hopes local citizens will make this possible. The theater is co-sponsoring a project called "Send a Kid to Broadway," scheduled for June 2009. This project will enable some children and youths, along with adults and chaperones, to attend two Broadway shows, Mary Poppins and Wicked, and squeeze in all the sights that can be packed into a four-day visit to the Big Apple. Those who would like a chance to help a child fulfill a dream, can clean out their attic or garage, help a non-profit organization and do some money-saving shopping by joining in a fund-raising yard sale. The event is co-sponsored by Karen Lavender, Tedi Gibbons and Journey School of the Arts and will be held, rain or shine, inside the former Brown Furniture Company building on East Frederick Street on Saturday, Aug. 2 from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. The fundraiser needs the help of the public as they seek donations of clean used household items, clothing on hangers, toys in good condition, antiques and collectibles, shoes, linens, furniture, etc. Those wishing to contribute in this way, may call the Little Theatre office at 489- 4589, the Journey office at 489-9863, or the Lavender home at 488-3866 and ask that your items be picked up any time between now and Aug. 2. Fresh-baked food items will also be available. Those who so desire may make monetary donations that will be paired with proceeds from the yard sale to send as many kids as possible to Broadway. Several fundraising events will be held during the year and will be announced at a later time, the sponsors said. Persons having questions concerning the project may call Tedi Gibbons at 489-9863. |
