Woman says she was beaten, pushed into fire by boyfriend
      The Cherokee County Sheriff's Office is investigating a July 20 incident during which a 35-year-old Blacksburg woman allegedly was pushed into a fire during an assault by her boyfriend. Police said the woman had burns on her right arm and two black eyes at the time the report was taken.

Final inspection of learning center postponed

      A final inspection of the Cherokee Community Learning Center scheduled for Tuesday was postponed. An inspector from the state's Office of School Facilities (OSF) left the site after an hour since AT&T had not finished installing phone lines in the building. Southern Management officials hope the inspection can be rescheduled for later this week.

Yard sale to benefit county employee

      Libby Jones knows a yard sale won't raise all the money her mom is likely to need going forward but hopes it will help. "I have to do something for my mom," she said. Chances are good that anyone who dropped by the Cherokee County Recycling Center in recent years bumped into Jones' mother, Phyllis Russell, even if they didn't know her by name.

Restaurant makes donation to Children's Home

      While those traveling on Floyd Baker Boulevard only see the ever-changing menu selections at the Lighthouse Restaurant, the local eatery is out to prove it is not your average restaurant. Lighthouse presented a $500 donation to the Cherokee Children's Home (CCH) on Monday, adding its name to a list of donors for the non-profit group.

      Jobless rate up The unemployment rate rose to 8.3 percent here in June from 8.1 percent in May, according to the State Employment Security Commission report. Statewide, the unemployment rate dropped to 6.2 percent in June after reaching a year-to-date high of 6.5 percent in May.
