Final inspection of learning center postponed

By SCOTT POWELL Ledger Staff Writer spowell@gaffneyledger.com

A final inspection of the Cherokee Community Learning Center scheduled for Tuesday was postponed.

An inspector from the state's Office of School Facilities (OSF) left the site after an hour since AT&T had not finished installing phone lines in the building. Southern Management officials hope the inspection can be rescheduled for later this week.

The $7 million facility located off Allison Road next to Luther Vaughan Elementary will house the district's adult education, alternative education, and parenting programs.

A temporary occupancy permit will be issued for the community learning center once it passes the final inspection, Southern Management senior project manager Jim Britton said. This will allow the district to begin moving furniture into the building.

Contractor Sossamon Construction will then spend time correcting punch list items from the final inspection, Britton said. Once those items are corrected, the district will receive a permanent occupancy permit. The community learning center is the latest school building project to be finished.

Gaffney High School received a temporary occupancy permit in late May for its new ninth grade addition. Furniture was moved into the building over the summer. District technology staff is preparing to install computer labs while construction workers complete the punch list.

A ninth grade orientation will be held Aug. 14 at 7 p.m. Students will be able to tour the ninth grade wing while attending orientation.
