Play-in bracket could give losers second lease on life

      A quick three-game sweep of Fort Mill in the opening round of the American Legion playoffs a few weeks ago guarantees Post 109 a spot in a play-in bracket for the state tournament. Team director Jug Wallace learned of the bracket after receiving a phone call from an American Legion baseball official.

      Gaffney girls basketball coach Stacey Parris has a good idea how her team will react the first time a game goes down to the wire this season. The Lady Indians went 7-2 in league play last week at a Carolina's Finest basketball camp held July 10-13 at the University of North Carolina.

      Granard football practice begins Aug. 12 Granard Middle School will begin football practice on Aug. 12 from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. Players must have a physical performed by their family physician. Physical forms are available at the school office. Players should wear shorts, tennis shoes and a T-shirt to practice.

Panthers get last two draftees into camp

      CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - The Carolina Panthers signed third-round draft pick Charles Godfrey and seventh-rounder Geoff Schwartz on Monday, leaving them with only two unsigned draft choices. Terms were not available. The only remaining draftees the Panthers have not yet signed are firstrounders Jonathan Stewart and Jeff Otah.
