Fund raisers

St. John's United Methodist Church in Blacksburg will have a church-wide yard sale Saturday, Aug. 2, from 7 a.m.- until. Come enjoy biscuits and gravy for breakfast and a grilled hot dog lunch with chips and a drink. All proceeds will benefit local special needs. St. John's United Methodist is located at 105 S. Rutherford St. (next to the Blacksburg library).

There will be a fish fry sale Saturday, Aug. 2, from 11 a.m.-until at Bethel Baptist Church, 218 Dr. L.M. Rosemond Lane. Fish plates will be $6 and include baked beans, slaw, dessert and drink. Fish sandwiches will be $3. The fund raiser is being sponsored by Malisha Smith, a contestant for "Woman of the Year 2008" at Bethel.

Benefit yard sale

Journey School of the Arts'"Send A Kid to Broadway" campaign kicks off Saturday, Aug. 2, at 8 a.m. with a yard sale, rain or shine, from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Brown Building on East Frederick Street. There will be clothing, shoes, household goods, sleepwear, decorative items, antiques and collectibles. Baked goods will also be for sale.

Reunions

Descendants of Violet Goudelock and Morgan Byers will have their 28th family reunion Aug. 2-3 in the Family Life Center at Shady Grove Baptist Church.

The Whelchel family reunion will be held Sunday, Aug. 3, at 1 p.m. at the recreational building on Whelchel Road. Plastic utensils, cups, plates and ice will be provided. Everyone is welcome to come enjoy an afternoon of fun and fellowship.

Notices

The Gaffney and Blacksburg locations of the Cherokee County Public Library will be closed Thursday, Aug. 14, for a staff development day. Normal hours will resume Friday, Aug 15.

All women who played softball for Alberta Buscheva Rogers are asked to attend an important meeting on Saturday, Aug. 2, at 1 p.m. at Mayberry Park on Hwy. 29. Agenda will be discussed when meeting is called to order.

Church news

New Trinity Christian Fellowship Ministries, 711 Cherokee Ave., will have a program Sunday, Aug. 3, at 4 p.m. The theme is "Study to Show Thyself Approved Unto God." Choirs and praise dancers are invited to participate. A. Sherman Davis is the pastor and founder of New Trinity.

White Plains Baptist Church will have its annual revival services Aug. 3-6. Sunday services begin at 3 p.m. Monday through Wednesday services begin at 7 p.m. The Rev Kerwin Wray, pastor of Knuckles Chapel Baptist Church, will be the guest speaker. The Rev. James Patton Jr. is the pastor.

Donna Douglas, who portrayed Elly Mae Clampett on The Beverly Hillbillies, will be guest speaker Sunday, Aug. 3, at 11 a.m. at Blue Branch Baptist Church, 1703 Pacolet Hwy. Everyone welcome.

The Shady Grove Church Sunday School Department will have its annual Sunday School promotion recognition service Sunday, Aug. 3, during the morning worship service. Students moving to a new class and teacher will receive promotion certificates and other recognition.

Mt. Sinai Baptist Church, 2911 S. Pine St., Spartanburg, will have a Community Health Fair on Saturday, Aug. 2, from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. There will be blood pressure and cholesterol checks and the CVS Diabetes Care Center will be on hand. Sickle Cell Anemia screening will also be available. Various health information will be provided for the entire family. There will be games, prizes, hot dogs and refreshments. Way of Life Praise and Worship Center, 1320 Old Georgia Hwy., will have a benefit celebration, "Let the Praise Begin," on Saturday, Aug. 2, at 6 p.m. honoring the memory of Margret A. Dawkins. Featured singers include The Gospel Edition, The Chilites, Gospel Tones, Southland Troubadors, Harris Brothers, Joylites, Royal Six, and Steve Allen and Sons.
