Mary (Granny) Scruggs Phillips, 85, of Magnolias of Gaffney, formerly of 2439 Overbrook Drive, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, Aug. 9, 2008, at Upstate Carolina Medical Center.

Born in Cherokee County, she was the widow of Roy Lee Phillips and daughter of the late Robert Edmond Scruggs and Lillie Martin Scruggs. Mary was a simple woman with a big heart. All who met her, left as her friend. She loved her family more than they will ever know. She was "Granny" to everyone, even residents of Magnolias Assisted Living. She will be missed by so many. This world was a better place by having her in it.

Mary was the last living descendant of the Robert Edmond Scruggs family. She was a homemaker and a member of Midway Baptist Church.

Surviving are two sons, Dane Lee Phillips and wife, Sara, and John K. Phillips and wife, Marlene, all of Gaffney; two daughters, Mae Ruth Martin of Boiling Springs and Brenda P. Davis and husband, Gary L., of Gaffney; 11 grandchildren, Bobby L. Phillips, Sandy P. Long and husband, Jeff, Dana Gallman, Angie Spake and husband, Darrell, Theresa Harris and husband, Billy, Jon Phillips and wife, Caroline, Kelli Gandy and husband, Brett, Neely Swofford and husband, Eric, Amanda (JoJo) Osment, Shanda Calvert and husband, Richard, and Lisa Cheatwood: 24 great-grandchildren; eight great-great- grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews: and a daughter-inlaw, Guynell Phillips of Gaffney.

In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Phillips was preceded in death by two sons, Robert L. Phillips and Charlie Phillips; two brothers, Kermit Scruggs and Ben Scruggs; and two sisters, Emmaree Hames and Virginia Sailor.

The family will receive friends Monday, Aug. 11, from 2-3 p.m. at Blakely Funeral Home. Services will immediately follow at 3 p.m. in Blakely Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Vernon Craig officiating. Interment will be in Frederick Memorial Gardens.
