It takes two...
Davidson, Craig jockey for position behind center while adjusting to new offensive scheme
Joe Craig (left) and Bo Davidson have been taking the majority of the snaps during summer drills. Malcolm Long cemented his place in Gaffney's pantheon of football legends after leading the Indians to consecutive Class 4A titles, and an undefeated season his senior year.
Replacing South Carolina's Mr. Football last year was no easy task for head coach Phil Strickland, shuffling quarterbacks throughout the season.
Three signal callers took their place in the Indian backfield last season before sophomore Joe Craig took the reins in the final game of the 2008 regular season.
Spending most of his time at wide receiver during the year, Craig revealed how much of a weapon he could be for Gaffney with a 64-yard touchdown run against rival Spartanburg.
The speedster would show glimpses of greatness in the playoffs, helping the Indians to within a game another trip to Columbia.
Now a junior, Craig and fellow quarterback Bo Davidson have both spent significant time under center so far this summer.
Equipped with the ability to both run and pass, the two signal callers give Strickland and co-offensive coordinators Perry Woolbright and Donnie Littlejohn options while installing the no-huddle into Gaffney's offensive arsenal.
"The transition has been pretty smooth so far," Strickland said. "Our players are getting used to it and we hope to continue seeing improvement."
In previous years, the Indians rode a bruising rushing attack along with an efficient passing game to success. That won't change this season— just expect it to be at a faster pace.
"I like what we've done in the past, but I've liked the progress we've made since practice started," Strickland said. "But we still are going to be balanced. We simply aren't going to let defenses dictate what we do on offense."
A number of the Indians' skill players return this year, including running back Jeremiah Cochran and wide receiver Emison Hughes.
Strickland said he has been pleased with Craig and Davidson this summer. The coach gives a lot of credit to Woolbright and Littlejohn for how the two signal callers have reacted to the change in offense.
"The coaches have been working with them and the rest of the offense," Strickland said. "They are making sure everyone is comfortable in what we are doing."
