HUGHES II Former Gaffney High basketball star AZ Reid gives a young fan his autograph during a cookout Thursday. He left Friday morning to begin his professional basketball career in Italy. It's always hard to say goodbye.

But AZ Reid made sure he left Gaffney with a bang Thursday, giving local residents a small piece of his appreciation for their support through the years by holding a cookout in front of The Dynasty clothing store on Frederick Street.

For much of the day, family and friends of Reid made their way to the location hoping to get a glimpse of one of their own before he departed for Italy and his new career as a professional basketball player.

"I hate to leave, but I'm excited to start a new chapter in my life," Reid said. "I wanted to do a little something so everyone could mingle and enjoy themselves.

"This was my opportunity to share my success with the town. They have always been behind me. Now it's my turn to give back."

Reid left to join his new team, Cimberio Varese of the Italian League, earlier Friday. He begins training camp Aug. 17, with his professional career scheduled to begin Oct. 11.

The former Gaffney hoops star helped lead the Indians to three consecutive Class 4A state titles earlier this decade.

Reid continued his success at the college level with High Point University, where he was named the Big South Conference Player of the Year on two occasions.

In addition, Reid became the only player in conference history with at least 2,000 points and 1,000 rebounds for his career. He finished with 1,013 rebounds, a league record.

Despite the opportunity to go overseas and play the game he loves, Reid said he will miss being able to see his family on a regular basis.

"It's going to be tough without them," he said. "But I know it's a blessing to be able to play (basketball) at a high level. I promise to make everyone proud."

Reid expects to be in Europe for the next 10 months.
