District makes first bond payment

      The Cherokee County School District made the first payment Monday on its recently completed $35 million school building program. School trustees unanimously approved a resolution to make a $4.5 million bond payment. This is the first of 20 annual bond payments the district will make to retire debt on new school building projects completed this summer.

Trustees will use unexpected 'windfall' to increase clerks' pay

      The Cherokee County School District could finish its most recent school year with an additional $500,000 in revenue. This figure is a preliminary finding from an audit report being completed by Gaffney accountant Ben Kochenower. The audit of the district's finances is expected to be done by the end of the month.

City, county election commissions certify results
County schedules runoff election for Cherokee County School District's District 6 trustee for Tuesday, Aug. 26
      Results of Tuesday's election became official Thursday as the Cherokee County and City of Gaffney election commissions both met to certify the winners. There were no surprises at either meeting, though the work of the Cherokee County Election Commission is not yet done.

Somebody's stealing packages left by 'Brown'
      The Gaffney Police Department reported the theft of two separate UPSdelivered packages from South Petty Street homes last week. According to police reports, a UPS package delivered to a home in the 600 block of South Petty was stolen between 4:34 p.m. Aug. 5 and 6 a.m. Aug. 6. The package contained two pairs of ladies "Keen" shoes valued at $206.

Second annual 'Tour de Peach' planned for September 6

Enrollment at SCC Cherokee branch up to 390

      Spartanburg Community College (SCC) has seen high demand for the 98 classes it will offer when school starts Monday on the Cherokee County branch campus. Preliminary enrollment figures show 390 students will attend multiple classes in Cherokee County this fall, said Kelley Jones, executive assistant to Spartanburg Community College President Dr. Dan Terhune.
