Enrollment at SCC Cherokee branch up to 390

Spartanburg Community College (SCC) has seen high demand for the 98 classes it will offer when school starts Monday on the Cherokee County branch campus.

Preliminary enrollment figures show 390 students will attend multiple classes in Cherokee County this fall, said Kelley Jones, executive assistant to Spartanburg Community College President Dr. Dan Terhune. Students are still registering this week for the fall semester.

Spartanburg Community College made several adjustments in the class schedule when some classes filled up quickly during registration, Jones said. The college offers a mixture of general education, continuing education and transitional courses at the Cherokee County campus. Students can earn two-year associate degrees in art and sciences such as accounting and management.

"We are very pleased Cherokee County residents are taking advantage of this opportunity," Jones said. "We will offer a limited number of flex start classes in mid-September for people who didn't register early. These classes will meet more frequently to allow these students to finish the course in December."

All students pay in-county tuition rates at the college's Cherokee, Spartanburg and Tyger River campuses. One semester at Spartanburg Community College costs approximately $1,600.

New students will enroll this fall in the radiation protection technician training programs offered on the Cherokee County branch campus, Jones said. The first class graduated from the radiation protection technician program in May.

Students enrolled in the college program can take online and classroom courses.

In their second year, students participate in two, 4- week paid internships at Duke Energy. The internships have a salary of $12 to $15 per hour with training done by Duke Energy-certified faculty.
