Ellen H. Hayes

Cherokee County native

SHELBY - Ellen Hammett Hayes, 80, died Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2008, at Century Care of Shelby.

Born in Cherokee County, S.C., she was retired from Fiber Industries in Shelby and was a former member of Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church, where she was a former Sunday School teacher and nursery worker. She was also a member of the Keep In Touch group.

Mrs. Hayes adored her grandchildren and greatgrandchildren and loved baseball, Gardner-Webb basketball and NASCAR racing.

She was preceded in death by her husband, H.B. Hayes; her parents, R.G. Grady and Eula Robbs Hammett of Gaffney; a sister, Francis Martin; and a great-grandson, Peyton Hayes.

Surviving are a son, Allen Hayes and wife, Christine, of Shelby; sisters and brothersin law, Marie and Parson Parham of Spartanburg, Miriam and Royce Hayes of Shelby, Millie and Bill Spake of Waynesville, N.C., Ozelle and Jack Mauney of West Palm Beach, Fla., Carolyn Swaney of Katy, Texas; and Margaret Quinn of Gaffney; grandsons, Patrick Hayes and wife, Kelly, of Belmont, N.C., Michael Hayes and wife, Sara, of Shelby and Matthew Hayes of Shelby; and great-grandchildren, Easton and Addison Haye and Zach and Seth Turner.

A memorial service will be held Friday, Aug. 15, at 6:30 p.m. at Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church, Shelby, conducted by Dr. Eric Davis. The family will receive friends in the church sanctuary following the service.

The family is at the home of Allen and Christine Hayes, 3119 Sandie Drive, Shelby.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church, 198 Pleasant Ridge Church Road, Shelby, N.C. 28152.
