Offense shines at Border Showcase

      DUNCAN— Friday's game vs. Crest in Duncan may have been a mere preseason game to most. But for Gaffney it was a chance for to open its 2008 campaign with a statement. The tough running of Jeremiah Cochran and the efficient play of Bo Davidson and Joe Craig helped the Indians do just that with a 27-14 win over Crest at Border Showcase IV.

      The sight most Gaffney football fans get of head coach Phil Strickland is that of a strict general always aiming for perfection. However, the coach does have one soft spot— family accomplishments, especially those by his sons, Andy and Tommy.

Phelps passes Spitz with eighth gold medal

      BEIJING (AP) — One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight. Yep, Michael Phelps got them all. Phelps wrapped up the greatest Olympics anyone has ever had, capturing his record-breaking eighth gold medal Sunday by helping the United States win the 400-meter medley relay — in yet another world-record time, too.

      When Blacksburg head coach Mickey Moss was hired a few months ago, he promised the Wildcats would return to the workmanlike mentality the program had earned through the years. Such tough play was on display Friday night for Blacksburg, as Moss' squad fought to a 6-6 tie with Cherryville (N.C.).

      NEW YORK (AP) — By the time Georgia was done demolishing Hawaii in the Sugar Bowl, it was apparent the Bulldogs were well on their way to being No. 1 — to start the 2008 college football season. Seeking its first national championship in 28 years, Georgia is on top of The Associated Press preseason Top 25 for the first time.
