Nell Turner

2008-08-18 / Obituaries

SPARTANBURG - Nell Davis Turner, 90, of Spring Arbor in Spartanburg, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, Aug. 15, 2008, at Mary Black Memorial Hospital. Prior to her move to Spring Arbor a year ago, Mrs. Turner lived on Brittany Road in Gaffney.

Born in Cherokee County, she was the widow of Frank Turner, with whom she operated an automotive business for many years in Gaffney. After Mr. Turner's death, Mrs. Turner was asked by the Aug. W. Smith Company to manage a store they were opening in Gaffney. Nell's love for fashion and her business experience gave her an opportunity to make a new career for herself. She later opened her own dress shop in downtown Gaffney. Mrs. Turner was the daughter of the late A.O. and Bertie Ruppe Davis of the Cherokee Creek community.

Mrs. Turner lived by the philosophy that, with the Lord's help, you create your own happiness. Her greatest happiness, she said, came from helping others. Before she moved to Spartanburg, she especially enjoyed volunteering at the hospital in Gaffney, where she was twice chosen Volunteer of the Year.

Mrs. Turner is survived by a daughter, Lana Turner Mahaffey and her husband, Randy, of Spartanburg; two grandsons, Clay Mahaffey III and his wife, Stacy, of Spartanburg and David Charles Truby of Pasadena, Calif.; a sister, Harriett Montez McKown of Spring Arbor; a granddaughter, Deborah Kay Truby Riordan and her husband, Gary, of Little Rock, Ark.; and five great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Turner was predeceased by a daughter, Vickie Turner Truby and her husband, David; a brother, Kyle Davis of Gastonia, N.C.; a sister, Hetty Marcel Baucom of Oakboro, N.C.; a grandson, David Morrow Mahaffey; and a granddaughter, Mary Katherine Truby.

Graveside services were held Sunday, Aug. 17, at 3 p.m. at Frederick Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Joel Sellers officiating. The family received friends immediately after the service at the cemetery.

Mrs. Turner was a member of First Baptist Church in Gaffney for many years, and any memorials are to be sent to the First Baptist Church, 200 N. Limestone St., Gaffney, S.C. 29340, to be used for mission work.

The family will be at the home of Randy and Lana Mahaffey, 124 Romaine Drive, Spartanburg.
