Trustee election Tuesday

By SCOTT POWELL Ledger Staff Writer spowell@gaffneyledger.com

Jamie Martin and Joe Craig will face off in a runoff election Tuesday to determine the winner of the District 6 school board seat.

The runoff became necessary when Martin fell six votes short of the "50 percent plus one" margin of victory required under a school board election law passed by local lawmakers last year. Under the new law, Cherokee County Election Commission Executive Director Suzanne Turner said the top two candidates in a school board race must participate in a runoff election two weeks following the general election.

Martin or Craig will be officially sworn in with the newly elected school board members at the Sept. 8 board meeting. School board members serve four year terms and receive an annual salary of $5,000.

Polls will be open in four precincts Tuesday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The voting precincts and their poll locations are Gaffney Ward I (Mary Bramlett Elementary), Limestone Mill (Cherokee County Boys and Girls Club), Alma (Alma Elementary), and Pleasant Grove (New Harvest Church of God.)
