City rolls out the welcome mat for Limestone students

      Dr. Ronn Radcliff was in Florence when he heard Thursday the City of Gaffney was holding a first-ever welcome celebration for new and returning Limestone College students. He immediately curtailed his plans and came back to Gaffney to set up temporary shop outside Gaffney City Hall on Friday night for Limestone on Limestone.

Six sent to hospital following Sunday accident

      Six people were sent to the hospital following a violent two-car crash in Gaffney on Sunday afternoon that sent one of the cars careening into the front yard of a Cherokee County 911 emergency dispatcher and the other into the dispatcher's truck.

GOAL POST MAKER
     Floyd Leonard "Honeybee" Parker helped make the last goal posts used by the Gaffney High football team at W.K. Brumbach Stadium. Parker was a pipe welder and metal fabricator with his own shop Busy Bee Welding. He installed the goal posts in 1972 with the help of then-Gaffney High Principal Wayne Whiteside.

Local doctor selected for Duke study
      Gaffney optometrist Dr. Nord Davis has been selected to participate in a new Duke University Medical Center study that will involve spending the next two years looking at how eye doctors diagnose and treat patients who suffer from glaucoma.

Fire turns life upside down for mother, daughter

      A Cherokee County woman and her daughter are picking up the pieces after a fire engulfed their home August 18. Sherry Elliott and her daughter Amber Hutchins were shocked to find their double-wide mobile home in shambles Monday following the blaze.

     IRON MEN — Blacksburg High football players Matt Dillingham (77), Brett Lanier (53), Brent Bonner (81) and Vinnie Thompson (17) rub an anvil Friday before the season opener against Walhalla. Players will rub the anvil before each home game in a new pre-game tradition. Coaches hope this will help connect the football team to Blacksburg, known as the "Iron City" in the town's early days.

New home starts continue downward spiral

      New home starts in Cherokee County are staying on a downward trend through July. According to the latest report from the Home Builders Association of Cherokee County, there were five new home starts in the county in July compared to eight new home starts in July 2007.

Horses apparently believed the grass was greener on the other side of the fence
      Horses hungry for some fresh grass on a neighboring property allegedly caused $2,000 in fence damage. According to the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office, the fence damage occurred in the 3400 block of Pacolet Highway on Aug. 22. Police listed the incident simply as damage to property.

Auditions tonight
     Children are invited to audition this Monday at 6:30 p.m. in Fullerton Auditorium for roles in the upcoming production of "Beauty and the Beast" at Limestone College. Children should bring a song to sing. Adults will audition for roles in the musical on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. Show dates are Nov. 12-22.
