It may have taken 71 years for Gaffney to move from its home across town at W.K. Brumbach Stadium, but it took less than five minutes for Gaffney to get used to its new digs.

In what was termed as a "dress rehearsal" for both the stadium and the school's football squad, the Indians looked ready for the big time, outscoring Broome and Laurens 27-0 in the American Community Bank Cherokee County Football Classic.

"It was good to come out here and play well in front of our fans and in the new stadium," said Gaffney head coach Phil Strickland.

Gafffney played two quarters during the jamboree, opening up against Broome and closing the curtain on the stadium's first night with Laurens.

It didn't take the Indians long to light up the scoreboard on their first drive against Broome. Following a long run from quarterback Bo Davidson, senior workhorse Jeremiah Cochran rambled his way into the end zone to put Gaffney up 6-0.

After the Centurions went three plays and out on their initial possession of the game, Joe Craig took the reins under center.

With the help of shifty running back Kenard Lipscomb, Craig finished off Gaffney's second drive of the contest with a touchdown from 2 yards out to put his team up 13-0.

Sophomore signal caller DeEdward Burris was called upon to lead the Indians on their third drive of the night, achieving the same result as his counterparts.

He was able to connect with wide receiver Emison Hughes in the corner of the end zone for a score, giving the team its final margin of victory, 20-0.

Gaffney would also reap good results in the second quarter against Laurens.

Using its strong running attack to eat valuable time on the clock, Lipscomb would provide the only scoring needed for the Indians, as his five-yard score helped the team defeat the Raiders 7-0.

During the scoring drive, Davidson was 4-for- 5 for 32 yards passing on the drive.

Not to be outdone, the Indians' defense showed it was in regular season form. Gaffney held both opponents on the night to a total of minus-8 yards.

"Our defense definitely played well," Strickland said. "But there is still work to be done."

Strickland is still a bit concerned about his secondary, which he said blew a few coverages against Laurens.

"We did a good job and (the defense) is getting better, but (Laurens) had some open receivers and they didn't hit them or they could have hurt us," Strickland said. "We're playing a lot of inexperienced, young kids, but they've got some talent."

While some work still needs to be done in the days leading up to Gaffney's opener against Dorman, he believes his team is game ready.

"We'll definitely be ready," Strickland said. "I liked a lot of what I saw tonight and these kids will do nothing but get better.

"But Friday night, we'll see how good we really are."
