Labor Day barbecue benefits MOW
Masonic Lodge No. 186 sponsoring third annual event
It is still good to give to others, just ask the local Meals on Wheels (MOW). More than 400 hot meals daily go out to elderly and disabled Cherokee County residents. Churches, businesses and groups in the area have given of themselves to assist MOW. Among those contributing to the Christianbased organization are members of Gaffney Masonic Lodge No. 186, sponsors of a Labor Day hash and barbecue sale on Monday, Sept. 1. Proceeds will go to Meals on Wheels. "We were thrilled when they wanted to give back," said Cherokee County Meals on Wheels Executive Director Terry Dennis. "I'm glad the members of the (Masonic) Lodge had us in mind." Large portions of hash, barbecue and cole slaw will be on sale at the event. Plates can be picked up from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. This is the third consecutive year the Masons will donate proceeds from the event to the local MOW chapter. "The first year was good, and the second was even better," Dennis said. "Hopefully, this one will surpass the past two." The nonprofit organization's last fundraiser was its annual golf tournament in May. Traditionally held before the "dogs days" of summer begin, funds donated help MOW get through the summer months, Dennis said. "Summer months are pretty lean for us, with our amount of donations going down," Dennis said. "During the summer, our clients have a lot of friends and family helping them out." But Dennis said assistance from the Masonic Lodge helps the group continue delivering meals to the sick and shut-in during the fall and winter. In addition to the hash and barbecue sale, Deja Vu Consignment Shop will be collecting funds for MOW on Sept. 5-6. |
