      While South Carolina's highway fatality rates are down this year, members of the South Carolina Highway Patrol have no plans to let down their guard.

Fewer travellers expected for upcoming Labor Day weekend
      Despite a decline in gas prices in recent weeks, fewer motorists are expected to take to the highway for the upcoming Labor Day weekend, according to AAA Carolinas. About 352,000 South Carolina drivers are expected to hit the road this weekend, a nearly 1 percent decrease from the number of travelers during the holiday last year.

Fay drops five inches here, but drought persists
      Prayers for rain were answered this week as several inches of precipitation fell on Cherokee County. The National Weather Service in Greer reported five inches of rain was dumped on the county since Monday from remnants of Hurricane Fay. More than eight inches of rain was reported in Charlotte, while Chester received just shy of seven inches during the same time span.

River flow above normal; rainfall 9" below average
      What a difference a few weeks and some heavy rains have made on the Broad River. After recording a record low flow of 81 cubic feet per second Aug. 10-11, the flow had risen to 6,040 cubic feet per second Wednesday, according to information provided by the United States Geological Administration (USGA).

County raises jail rates
      Municipalities will be paying more to incarcerate their prisoners at the Cherokee County Detention Center this fiscal year. Cherokee County Interim Administrator Ben Clary said the per diem rate will increase from $42.37 to $44.32. The new rate is retroactive to July 1, Clary said.

     AIRLIFTED — A 39-year-old Gaffney man was listed in good condition Thursday afternoon at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center following a Wednesday afternoon motorcycle accident on Chandler Drive. Todd Franklin Holmes, of South View Street, was flown by helicopter to the Spartanburg hospital from a landing zone the Gaffney Fire Department set up in the parking lot adjacent to W. K. Brumbach Stadium. Hundreds of people and players assembled for a football jamboree witnessed the event, as the medical helicopter approached the landing zone almost directly above them. According to a Gaffney Police Department accident report, Holmes was driving his motorcycle east on Chandler Drive when he collided with the right side of a truck that was making a right turn into a driveway in the 200 block. Holmes was wearing a helmet, according to the report. Damage to his Kawasaki motorcycle is estimated at $2,500. - Tim Gulla

Cherokee County student enrolled in prestigious Governor's School
      An aspiring inventor, Matthew Burrows, often surprised his parents growing up with the contraptions he built in his room. Burrows has set up a door buzzer to trigger an alarm in his room. He has experimented with robotics and hopes to enroll at MIT following high school graduation.

     NEW OFFICE IN GAFFNEY — The Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce hosted a Ribbon Cutting and Grand Opening for the new Gaffney office of Higginbotham & Nease Orthodontics on Wednesday, August 20. Located in Hyatt Place, 424 Hyatt Street, Suite E, in Gaffney, the group has been in practice in Spartanburg for 35 years and now opens an office to serve their Cherokee County patients and local referrals. Dr. Phil Higginbotham and Dr. Eric Nease now have offices in Duncan, Spartanburg and Gaffney to serve their patients. The dental practice is limited to orthodontics and plans are to have the Gaffney office open several days per week and expand the hours of operation as needed. Phone number at the new office is 488-9750. Higginbotham and Nease Orthodontics are members of the Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce. Dr. Eric Nease, Gaffney Mayor Henry Jolly and Dr. Phil Higginbotham are shown cutting the ribbon officially opening the office. Chamber Board President Dr. Hank Jolly and Chamber Executive Director Gene Moorhead are holding the ribbon. Also in attendance were Jack Tranavsky, Chamber Board 1st VP; Danny and Martha Stacy, owners of the office complex; and local dentists, Dr. Ron Barrett, Dr. Mack Carroll, and Dr. Jeff Cleland.

FCA, local churches to host 'Back to School'rally Saturday at GHS
      The Fellowship of Christian Athletes, the Thicketty Mountain Baptist Association, and local churches will host a Cherokee County "Back to School" Rally at the Gaffney High School Auditorium Saturday, August 30. USC Chaplin Adrian Despre will be the guest speaker along with Granard Middle School coach Kathy Littlejohn. My Calvary from Spartanburg will provide the music.

Second Shindig Sept. 4
      Make plans now to attend the next Shindig in Downtown Gaffney, which will be on Thursday, September 4th featuring "The New Familiars" with opening act, Alan Barrington. The concert will begin at 6:00 p.m., but come on down to the cabin early to get a good seat and to enjoy delicious food served up by local vendors.
