SLED investigating death threat against solicitor

      Seventh Circuit Solicitor Trey Gowdy was honored in San Francisco Friday with an award from his peers across the country for his work in prosecuting death penalty cases. Gowdy, whose district includes Cherokee and Spartanburg counties, has prosecuted six capital cases in the past eight years and each resulted in a death penalty sentence from a jury.

Students getting more workouts this year

Armed robbers strike local restaurant for third time in two months
      A South Granard Street restaurant has been held up at gunpoint for the third time in the last two months, according to a report from Gaffney Police Department. Two armed robbers wearing pantyhose and bandannas over their faces reportedly entered the Sandwich Castle at 508 S. Granard St. at about 12:15 a.m. Aug.

School district seeking accreditation

      The Cherokee County School District is preparing for an accreditation visit later this fall from educators across the Southeast. A committee of educators from North Carolina, Georgia, Florida and South Carolina will spend Nov. 9-12 visiting local schools and speaking with parents, teachers and school board members.

School district's energy savings down from last year, but still significant

      Energy educator Terry Kiser had a simple explanation Friday for why the district's utility savings are down $100,000 from previous years. Inclement weather and a hotter than normal spring led county schools to run heating and air conditioning units longer.

Officer injured in Sunday morning accident
