BRIEFS GHS jayvees lose to Dorman In junior varsity football action on Thursday, DeEdward Burris scored Gaffney's lone touchdown in a 19-6 loss at Dorman. In ninth-grade action, Joey Copeland threw two touchdown passes to Quinshad Davis in the Indians' 19-14 loss to Dorman. Saints crush Concord, 8-0 In men's soccer action, Limestone improved to 2-0 with an 8-0 win over Concord University. Keegan Ziada and Jel Moran each had two goals and an assist for the Saints. Limestone women win soccer opener The Limestone College women's soccer team opened its season with a 3-0 loss to UNC-Pembroke on Saturday. The Braves climb to 2-0 with the victory. "We got off to a slow start in the first half," commented Limestone Head Coach Tina Weaver. "But, we found our rhythm in the second half. We had a great desire to play well. It just wasn't our day offensively." UNC-Pembroke scored two of its goals in the first half at the 24th and 33rd minute marks. The Braves scored their final goal of the contest in the 47th minute. Limestone goalkeeper Diane Boyce had 12 saves. The Saints also had solid play from freshman defender Ashley Alderin-Fleagle. LC volleyball team splits tourney opener The Limestone College volleyball team began the 2008 season with a win and a loss on the first day of the Limestone Labor Day Tournament. The Lady Saints defeated Elizabeth City State but dropped their game to Adelphi. Limestone beat Elizabeth City State University, 3-1 (25-23, 19-25, 25- 14, 25-18). Freshman Danielle Seibert posted 28 assists and 6 kills in her college debut while junior Melissa Thomas contributed 12 kills and 6 blocks. Freshman Nina Milovanovic celebrated her birthday with six kills and two aces. Junior Chelsea Anthony and freshman Holli Dawson both had outstanding passing stats while contributing two aces apiece. The Lady Saints went on to lose a tough match to Adelphi University, 3-0 (25-13, 25-18, 25- 23). Youth wrestlng team holds sign up The Team Indian youth wrestling organization will be holding an early sign-up Sept. 1- Oct. 11 at SageSport of Gaffney. Ages four years to sixth grade are eligible. A copy of a birth certificate is required with the $45 fee. Call Sonny Delashmet at 490-8840 for more information. Panthers sign 5 to practice squad The Carolina Panthers have signed five players to the practice squad, including draft picks Nick Hayden and Geoff Schwartz. Running back DeCori Birmingham, receiver William Buchanon and safety Joe Fields were also signed Sunday. All five were released by the Panthers a day earlier as the team got down to the 53-man regular-season limit. The Panthers still have three more practice-squad spots to fill. Hayden was the Panthers' sixthround pick in April, but faced heavy competition at defensive tackle. Schwartz was cut after the Panthers decided to keep fellow offensive lineman and seventhround pick Mackenzy Bernadeau. Practice squad members can practice with the team during the week, but are not eligible to play in games. |
