Environmentalists challenge Duke's proposed nuclear plant

      With cameras surrounding the courtroom at the Cherokee County Courthouse on Wednesday, an environmental group appeared before a panel of judges from the Atomic Safety and Licensing Board in an attempt to halt Duke Energy's plans for a multi-billion dollar nuclear power plant near McKown's Mountain.

Environmental study finds soil contamination at Milliken's 'Big Mill'site

      Soil contaminants could derail the county's plan to purchase Millliken's "Big Mill" site. Cherokee Council agreed Wednesday to spend more money to complete an environmental study of the Milliken property it hopes will become the site of its new administration building.

9,236 students enrolled in county schools

      Cherokee County schools saw their enrollments climb in the 10 days of school before the Labor Day holiday weekend. There were 9,326 students enrolled in county schools on the 10th day of school. This was almost a 500-student increase from the 8,850 students that were in school for the first day of classes Aug. 18.

Lanes on I-85 to be closed
      The Department of Transportation will be performing lane closures from Sept. 5-7 on Interstate 85 from mile marker 10 to 19 in the north and south bound lanes. Lane closure times will be: Friday, 10 p.m.-8 a.m.; Saturday, 8 p.m.-10 a.m.; and Sunday, 9 p.m.-9 a.m.

Animal shelter's interim manager replaced by predecessor

      The new interim Cherokee County Animal Shelter manager is the old interim shelter manager. Cherokee County Finance Director Mike Vassey, who also served as the interim shelter manager after state authorities began an investigation at the shelter, has asked to return to his finance job, Cherokee County Interim Administrator Ben Clary told council members Wednesday.

SCHOLARSHIP PRESENTED
     The William E. Foster Jr. Scholarship was awarded to Jessica Dawkins, right, for academic excellence. The $1,000 award was presented by Mary L. Foster, widow of William E. Foster Jr. Dawkins is a 2008 graduate of Gaffney High School and will attend Lander University, majoring in accounting.

Dollar General holds grand opening

      Shopping may have become easier for local consumers with the arrival of another Dollar General store on Chesnee Highway. The new 9,014-square-foot retail store will be the fourth Dollar General location to open in Gaffney. Festivities celebrating its opening are scheduled for this weekend.
