Dolphins cap another successful season

The Cherokee County YMCA swim team finished 10th at the 2008 summer State Meet. Taylor Covington, Jonathan Overton and Lauren Kirby all captured state titles at the event. The Cherokee County YMCA swim team wrapped up another successful campaign with their 2008 summer awards ceremony.

The Dolphins, led by head coach Kevin Covington and assistant coach,Brittany Martin, finished 10th at the 2008 summer State Meet. Three CCFY Dolphin swimmers were able to capture state titles in individual events at the event.

Taylor Covington, 10, completed an undefeated regular season, and followed that up with a gold medal sweep in all four of her individual events. She claimed state titles in the 50 yard backstroke, the 50 yard butterfly, the 50 yard breaststroke, and the 100 IM. For her efforts she was awarded a trophy as the top swimmer in her age group at the Carolina Swim League Championships.

Lauren Kirby, 8, finished fifth in the 50 yard freestyle, and sixth in the 25 yard freestyle, before racing to a state title and medal in the 25 yard breaststroke.

Jonathan Overton, 5, claimed a state title in the 25 yard butterfly. He also finished second in the 50 yard freestyle, third in the 25 yard freestyle and fourth in the 25 yard backstroke. These results earned him a trophy for finishing third in his age division.

Other swimmers recording a top ten finish in an individual event included Emma Humphries, Molly Humphries, Sarah Humphries, Callie Ivey, Lance Kirby, Vanna Sams, Tanner McCraw, Christopher Overton, and Jasmine Tate.

Team awards were also presented at the awards ceremony. Dolphin Award winner was Brittany Martin. Jr. Dolphin Award winner was Emma Humphries.

High Points Award for females went to Taylor Covington, High Points Award males went to Tanner McCraw. Most Improved 11 and over went to Callie Ivey and Molly Humphries. Most Improved 10 and under went to Jasmine Tate. Rookie of the Year was awarded to Matthew Summers.

The Iron Dolphin Awardmale went to Jonathan Over- ton. Iron Dolphin awardfemale went to Taylor Covington. Sportsmanship Award - male was Tanner McCraw, Sportsmanship Award -female was Molly Humphries. Heart of the Team Award-Lance Kirby. Soul of the Dolphin Award- Greta Sams.

Dedication Award-Vanna Sams. Courage Award-Lauren Kirby. Extra Effort Award- Jasmine Tate. Team Spirit Award - Emma Humphries. Team Before Me Award-Sarah Humphries.
