WHAT'S UP Education The S.C .School for the Deaf and the Blind is offering "Tiny Fingers" sign language classes for babies and toddlers Oct. 6-Nov. 10 from 9:30-10:15 a.m. Classes will be in the Spring Annex Building on the SCSDB campus. The Cherokee County American Red Cross will have a baby-sitter certification course on Saturday, Sept. 13, from 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. and Monday, Oct. 13, from 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Participants can choose which date they wish to attend. The six-hour certification class includes hands-on activities, decision-making skills, first aid and basic care skills. The cost is $35 and includes a babysitter's handbooks. All classes will be at the ARC Service Center, 405 N. Logan St. Pre-registration and prepayment is required. To register, call 864-489-6066 or visit the ARC office during regular hours, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Senior Center events The Senior Centers of Cherokee County will offer a Chronic Disease/Living Well class at the Gaffney Senior starting Sept. 16 and continuing each Tuesday for eight weeks. Many people have a chronic illness, but education about their problem may not be the best way to help them. A better way is to offer information so that the illness can be better managed. A Matter of Balance class will begin Sept. 18 and continue each Thursday for eight weeks, also at the Gaffney Senior. The program is designed to help participants manage their balance and learn positive coping methods to reduce the fear of falling to remain active and independent. The programs are catered to seniors who have an illness or health problem and are interested in learning how to cope with them. For more information, call 487-2725. The Senior Centers of Cherokee County, 499 W. Rutledge Ave., will hold a craft show Saturday, Oct. 4, from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Booths will be $20, with booth rental fees going to the Blacksburg Senior Center Renovation Fund. Support groups AA meetings are held at 8 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday in the building behind Limestone Methodist Church on Carlisle Street. A group meets at St. Paul's Lutheran Church on Tuesdays at 6:30 p.m. (lit study) and Saturdays at 6 p.m. (open). Meetings The Kiwanis of Club of Gaffney meets the first and third Monday each month at The Lighthouse Restaurant on Floyd Baker Boulevard.
