County councilman irked at airport commission chairman's remarks
      A Cherokee County Councilman said he would accept the resignation of the airport commission chairman after his controversial remarks became public last week. In a meeting Tuesday to update his fellow commissioners, chairman Vic Sarratt described the airport project as having "stalled" and pointed the finger at apathetic county officials for dragging their feet.

Mary Bramlett students earn rewards for improved test scores
      Decorated in colorful balloons, 70 shiny bicycles waited in a line Friday to be claimed by their new owners at Mary Bramlett Elementary. The school district presented a new bicycle and helmet to any student who improved their scores at least one level on the state's Palmetto Achievement Challenge Test (PACT).

County looking for new shelter manager
      Apparently, Cherokee County Finance Director Mike Vassey isn't as agreeable as some county officials thought. Vassey had been appointed to interim consolidated animal shelter manager shortly after state authorities began a probe at the shelter earlier this summer.

      A sport utility vehicle parked on College Drive sustained about $1,200 in vandalism damages Aug. 29. Some time between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m., the Gaffney Police Department reported, someone scratched the sides and rear of a black 2004 Mercury Mountaineer.

New test has a name
      Cherokee County students will have a new test to pass, and it finally has a name. Voters have selected the official name for the test that will be given to elementary and middle school students this spring. The winning name — Palmetto Assessment of State Standards, or PASS - was chosen in an online ballot that resulted in 6,000 votes.
