Paramedics make quick turnaround
Of the 10 paramedics who made the trip to Louisiana for Gustav, seven made the return trip south to Texas for Ike.
      Less than 24 hours after they arrived back in Gaffney early Tuesday morning from a more than week-long deployment to Louisiana for Hurricane Gustav, a group of paramedics from Gaffney and Spartanburg were called back into service, this time for Hurricane Ike.

Grassy Pond residents in the dark
      Close to 200 homes in the Grassy Pond community were left without power for several hours on Wednesday as Duke Energy employees repaired utility poles damaged by a logging truck earlier in the day. The accident occurred shortly after noon in the vicinity of Ellis Ferry Road. Two utility poles were replaced.

Board director says national economy hurting development here
      Cherokee County is taking its lumps so far this year in regards to economic development. Speaking at the annual Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce Retreat Workshop Thursday, Cherokee County Development Board Director Jim Cook pointed the finger at a hobbled national economy as one of the main reasons for the current downturn in local economic development.

      What's going on in Gaffney? An upbeat Gaffney Mayor Henry Jolly spent 20 minutes today briefing the gathering at the Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce annual retreat on the city's many and varied projects and plans.

Man files suit after charges dropped
      A stint in jail was not on the breakfast menu at a local Hardee's restaurant, a lawsuit filed Wednesday in the Cherokee County Clerk of Courts Office contends.

Water coming
      A modern-day amenity most people take for granted is getting closer for people in a rural Cherokee County community. An engineering agreement was finalized in August for Phase III of the 99 Mile Island Road waterline extension project, Board of Public Works General Manager Donnie Hardin told his commissioners on Tuesday.

      BLACKSBURG - Broad River Baptist Church will have its 90th anniversary homecoming celebration on Sunday, Sept. 14. The Rev. Howard Allen, pastor of South Florence Baptist Church, will return to the church that he pastored from 1985-1991 to bring the message at the 11 a.m. worship service. All former pastors and families are invited as special guests.

     SCHOOL SUPPLIES — Newark recently donated a pallet of school supplies to Mary Bramlett Elementary School. The business conducted a school supply drive at the local distribution center and also held a football throwing contest to raise funds. Mary Bramlett received several hundred pounds of notebooks, notebook paper, pencils, book bags, erasers, scissors, crayons and other school necessities. "It was truly an honor to be able to help such a wonderful group as the staff and students at Mary Bramlett," a Newark spokesman said. Pictured at left is Newark employee Jeff Driskill as he loads up a truck to deliver the supplies. At right, are several school staff members with the donated supplies.

Red Cross appealing for donations
      GREENVILLE - It may seem as though we dodged a bullet with Gustav, but in reality, the work is just beginning. Eight Red Cross volunteers from the Upstate S.C. Chapter have been deployed to assist those affected by Tropical Storm Fay and Hurricane Gustav. Five of those volunteers are working to meet the feeding and sheltering needs of evacuees in Louisiana.

International Children's Choir to perform in Gaffney Sunday
      United in song and in spirit, a choir combining the voices of orphaned and disadvantaged children from several nations will bring their traveling road show to Gaffney. World Help's "Children of the World" International Children's Choir will perform at the First Baptist Church of Gaffney on Sept. 14 as part of its 2008-09 tour through the United States.

      Norfolk Southern train engineers had to creep through the City of Gaffney at a snail's pace Monday afternoon after a motorist took out one of the railroad crossing signals on Frederick Street.

      National Suicide Prevention Week is Sept. 7-13. Why? Suicide is the 11th leading cause of death in the United States. Suicides outnumber homicides by over 15,000 deaths per year nationally. One in 60 Americans has lost a loved one to suicide. South Carolina has over 500 suicides a year, out of 12,500 attempts.
