Single-gender classes appeal to students

      Jonah Patterson has no complaint about the fact there are no girls in his classes. Lexi Hadden is just as satisfied there are no boys in hers. Limestone-Central Elementary decided this year to have an all-boys and all-girls class in fourth grade. The same students will remain in single gender classes for the fifth grade next year.

District dealing with state cuts

      State budget cuts have cost Cherokee County School District more than $700,000 in school funding just weeks into the new school year. The school board approved a $61.8 million budget in June. Citing tax revenue concerns, the state Budget and Control Board ordered a 3 percent budget cut for all state agencies. The total cuts cost the district $736,000 in state funds.

Company earns OSHA recognition

      Sharon Dumit joked that most companies don't like to see her or her coworkers coming onto their properties. Ply Gem Siding Group in Gaffney, however, is a rarity among South Carolina employers welcoming Dumit and other workers from the South Carolina office of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) with open arms.

Airport economic study discussed

      It's a question that will likely decide the fate of the county's airport project - What impact will an airport have on the local economy? County leaders will know the answer in about six months. Columbia-based engineering firm W.K. Dickson met with county leaders last Monday to discuss the economic impact study.

Owner 'looking out for his customers'

      Cherokee County residents awoke Friday to feel one of the aftershocks of Hurricane Ike - surging gas prices. But the aftershock hardly registered a ripple for the hundreds of motorists who filled their gas tank at Johnny Little's Logan Street gas station over the weekend.

     McDANIEL RECEIVES ALTRUSA SCHOLARSHIP - Altrusa International of Gaffney awards a scholarship each year to a Cherokee County student who will enroll in a program of human services, healthcare or education leading to a bachelor's degree.This year's Altrusa scholarship recipient is Jordan McDaniel of Blacksburg, who plans to enter the nursing program at USC Upstate.

Cherokee County Farm Bureau holds annual meeting Sept. 9
      The Cherokee County Farm Bureau had its annual meeting of the membership on Tuesday, Sept. 9, at the Cherokee Shrine Club. There were approximately 140 members present to elect the Board of Directors for 2009. Those elected were Loye Mayfield Jr.

Classes help improve job-seeking skills
      The Cherokee County Public Library, in partnership with the Cherokee County Adult Education Program, is offering a series of four classes this month for adults, 18 years of age and older, who are interested in improving their job-seeking skills. Each class will be from 2-4 p.m. in at the main library in Gaffney, and will focus on a specific area of employment readiness.

Artwork will be for sale during production of 'Art'

      Life will imitate art when Limestone College theater students perform the Tony- Award winning comedy "Art" on Sept. 25-28. Community members are asked to donate some of their own artwork for sale in a fundraiser the theater department will hold at their shows. Profits will be used to help pay for a field trip to New York City next May.

Limestone inducts 12 into Society
      Ian Barker, Emily Carter, Kayce Peterson and Holly Weiss, all of Gaffney, were among 12 Limestone College students inducted into the Alpha Chi National Scholarship Honor Society during the college's Presidential Convocation on Thursday, Aug. 28, in Fullerton Auditorium.
