Oldtimers have a ball with fast-pitch softball game
It's been nearly 60 years since some players sped around the bases on some of the area's softball fields.
On Tuesday, their new field of dreams will be Commissioners Field, the site of the fifth annual Cherokee County Oldtimers Fast-Pitch Softball Game.
The game will begin at 7 p.m.
After three straight losses, the Blue Team finally broke into the winner's column last year.
Jerry Wallace, a former fast-pitch softball league star and director of the game, said the game gives the playes and fans a chance to relive some fond memories.
"There ain't no more fast-pitch softball, so this is a way to get us back together and bring back those days," Wallace said.
Fastpitch softball was especially popular here during the1 940s, '50s and '60s. As many as 1,000 fans would jam the stands to watch Hamrick Mills better Liberty Life at the Elm Street Ballpark.
Teams were sponsored by local businesses, including Arctic Drive In, Phillips Cleaners, City Tire and Sinclair Oil Company.
On Thursday, the players will get to relive Tuesday's game all over again at the annual banquet and hall of fame induction ceremony. Sagebrush Steakhouse will host the event at 6 p.m.
