Former Gaffney High products have big games

STAFF REPORTS

Tyson Petty Tyson Petty Gardner-Webb 31, Austin Peay 15

Former Gaffney High standout Tyson Petty had a 46-yard kickoff return and caught two passes for 34 yards. Gardner-Webb will enjoy an open date before returning home to host Sam Houston State at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Sept.27 at Spangler Field.

S.C. State 28,

Bethune-Cookman 19

Running back Will Ford rushed for 175 yards and two scores and quarterback Malcolm Long completed 16 of 24 passes for 211 yards and a touchdown to lead South Carolina State to a 28-19 triumph over Bethune-Cookman Saturday in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference contest at The Citadel's Johnson Hagood Stadium.

Tusculum 32,

Elizabeth City 30

Gaffney High product Jarvis Littlejohn watched Tusculum score a team safety with 5:16 remaining in the fourth quarter to take a commanding 32-7 lead over Elizabeth City State University Saturday night. What appeared to be a convincing 25 point lead quickly disappeared as the Vikings scored a touchdown and then recovered two onside kicks resulting in three touchdowns and a field goal to pull within two points. Yet the ultimate comeback was not to be as Elizabeth City backup quarterback Creven Powell overthrew Tashawn Lee for the two point conversion.

Georgia Southern 34,

Northeastern 27

Former Gaffney High linebacker J.B. Shippy recovered a fumble as part of fourth quarter heroics that allowed Georgia Southern to eventually win the game in overtime. Shippy finished with six tackles and a quarterback sack.

Leading 27-21 and starting a drive with 3:07 left in regulation, Northeastern drove into Georgia Southern territory. Facing 3rd-and-1 on the Eagles' 26, Georgia Southern's Chris Rogers forced a fumble and Shippy recovered on the 15.

With 94 seconds to work with on the clock, Georgia Southern quarterback Antonio Henton found freshman Leander Barney for 20 yards. On the very next snap, Henton found wide receiver Tim Camp for a 65 yard touchdown catch. However, the Huskies line broke through the middle and blocked Hartley's extra point attempt, leaving the game tied. The game went into overtime after a missed field goal as time expired.
