Craig provides needed spark with three touchdowns runs

By LARRY HILLIARD Ledger Sports Editor larry@gaffneyledger.com

The Gaffney offense needed a spark and Joe Craig provided one against T.L. Hanna on Friday.

Craig, a starting wide receiver, entered the game at quarterback in the second quarter and made an immediate impact, rushing for 153 yards and scoring three times.

On Craig's first series he found a hole and outraced the Yellow Jackets for a 57-yard touchdown.

"I just faked to Jeremiah (Cochran) and then we pulled a guard," Craig said. "It left a big hole to hit, so then I just juked the safety."

Craig said he expected to take a few snaps at quarterback but not until the second half.

But that plan changed when the offense started slowly.

"(The coaches) said I'd see some action (at quarterback) but when I was standing on the sidelines I saw holes and that the wide receivers were open," he said. "I saw some passing lanes open, but I didn't throw it because I ran it."

And very successfully. He scored twice more in the second half from 2 and 4 yards out, helping the Indians roll to the easy win.

"It felt good," he said. "It seemed like the team needed somebody to step up."

Craig said he's fine playing either wide receiver or quarterback.

"Wherever the team needs me, that's where I'll play," he said.
